Placement

If you're required to take AEP courses to meet UW English language proficiency requirements for undergraduate or graduate students, you'll be placed according to standardized test scores submitted to UW Admissions or the Graduate School.

The following standardized tests are accepted for determining placement:

  • SAT (undergraduate students only)
  • ACT (undergraduate students only)
  • IELTS
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet version)

You may also take the AEP Placement Test

If you don't submit a standardized test score or take the AEP Placement Test, you will automatically be placed in the lowest level English language course, ENGL 102

Qualifying Scores

The average of the reading and writing scores is used for placement into the academic reading/writing courses (ENGL 102-103). The average of the listening and speaking scores is used to determine if the communication strategies course (ENGL 104) is required.

Students may challenge their placement or try to satisfy the English language proficiency requirement by re-taking any of these tests or by taking the AEP Placement Test. If multiple scores are presented, the highest scores are used.
